SALISBURY-  On Saturday April 22, at 4:00 at the Scoville Memorial Library Dr Alfred Ivry, will be speaking about his new book "Maimonides' Guide of the Perplexed: A Philosophical Guide".  Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, or Maimonides was a medieval Jewish philosopher, one of the most influential Torah scholars of the Middle Ages. and an important  astronomer and physician.  Revered by Jewish historians, he figures prominently in the history of Islamic and Arab sciences.  His book “Guide to the Perplexed”  is  the preeminent work of Jewish philosophy, transcending its medieval origins. It has inspired as well as scandalized its readers through the centuries, its author apparently espousing a universal creed removed from the traditional Jewish beliefs he championed in his rabbinic writings. Dr Alfred  Ivry will discuss the radical commitment Maimonides had to philosophy, and the compromises he made with his faith.  Dr. Ivry taught medieval Jewish and Islamic philosophy at Cornell, Ohio State, Brandeis and New York University. His  book attempts to simplify and make plain Maimonides seminal work.-- Lawrence Davis-HollanderAdult Program CoordinatorScoville Memorial Library 38 Main Street Salisbury, CT 06068 860.435.2838 / 413.229.8316 (home office) Contact Lawrence Scoville events
